California crab opener: November 7, 2026
The recreational Dungeness season is scheduled to open Saturday, November 7, 2026 — ten days after a whale-risk assessment that can move it. This is the opener-morning briefing: what to check, in what order, and what can change after your first pull. For the full coast-wide decision calendar, see the Dungeness tracker.

Ten days before opener day
The first RAMP whale-risk assessment closes its window October 28 — ten days out. Its declaration is the difference between soaking traps on Nov 7 and watching the next window. CDFW Whale Safe Fisheries (RAMP)
Check these, in this order
Four checks, each one linked to the page that settles it.
- 1. Your zone's statusThe Oct 24–28 RAMP assessment sits ten days before the opener and can delay it zone by zone. Check the declaration for your CDFW Fishing Zone before you buy bait. CDFW Whale Safe Fisheries (RAMP)
- 2. Domoic status for your watersDomoic closures run independent of whale risk and can sit on one stretch of coast while the next opens. Health-department advisories post through CDPH. CDFW in-season ocean regulation changes
- 3. Depth and gear rules in effectAssessments can set a depth line (30 fathoms is the usual one) or cut trap counts on short notice; restrictions from the pre-opener assessment carry into opening morning. CDFW Whale Safe Fisheries (RAMP)
- 4. Limits and size, from the sourceBag limits, minimum size and sex rules live on CDFW’s crab page — read it the week of, not the month before. Wardens check the same page. CDFW crab fishing
What can change mid-season
The opener is the first decision of the season, not the last.
- The date itself. The Oct 24–28 assessment can push the opener for your zone by days or weeks. Last season it did exactly that.
- The gear you're allowed. Trap reductions and depth restrictions arrive with the opener, not after it — a restricted opener is a normal opener.
- Your zone, mid-season. The Nov 17–21 and Dec 6–22 windows re-check open zones, and in-season closures hit year after year. Opening day is not the last decision.
- Domoic, at any time. A health closure can land on an open whale-safe zone the week you planned to pull. The two risks don't coordinate.
Any of these change, you get an email.
Don't read about the delay at the ramp
Free tier gets the weekly digest with every declaration in it. Angler gets the email minutes after CDFW posts — the delay, the zone, the gear rule, with the link to prove it.
