The whale assessments that move crab seasons
Before California crab gear goes in the water, CDFW has to check the water for whales. The Risk Assessment and Mitigation Program runs in three windows this fall — Oct 24–28, Nov 17–21 and Dec 6–22, 2026 — and every declaration out of them can delay an opener, cut trap counts, set depth lines or close a zone. Here is the machinery, the calendar, and what each decision looks like on the water.

What a declaration can do
Four levers, each used in recent seasons. All of them post as in-season regulation changes.
- Delay. The opener moves for a zone or a set of zones until risk drops or gear rules change. Last season the October 24 assessment delayed the opener and limited take.
- Gear reduction. The fishery opens, but with fewer traps allowed per vessel — 2026's commercial season north of the zone lines opened January 15 under a 15 percent gear reduction.
- Depth restriction. Traps banned seaward of a line (30 fathoms is the usual one), keeping gear out of the depth band where whales and crab gear overlap.
- Closure. A fishing zone closes to trap gear when risk is high and can't be mitigated. Reopening needs a later assessment to clear it.
